Polyphasic sleeping

Well, we're in week three of the polyphasic sleep, and I'm finding that I slip up at least once a day, but thankfully, not during one of the important wake cycles (haven't been late to work once!)
I'm trying to find the ideal time to set my alarm for, since I don't really want to sleep more than 30-45 minutes, but the cats aren't helping with not letting me drop off, or waking me up during naps.  Once I solve that problem, my home naps should work a bit better.

I was supposed to be switched to a different team at work, which would have facilitated this schedule, however, they have changed their minds, and with the recent loss of two more team members (and no replacements in sight!), I don't anticipate a move anytime soon.

In other news, Lord of the Rings: Online is a pretty decent game.  It's not "ZOMG, I gotta play, gotta play, gotta play!", but it's pretty, doesn't require massive time investments and has lots of different things you can do.  Of course it IS limited by the constraints of the already-established universe, but fortunately, Tolkien was talented enough to create a very well-fleshed out world.

Off to the Ren Faire!

On my way...  To Dallas that is.  Finally getting to see my girlfriend after months!!!

In other news, the polyphasic sleeping is going well.  I just have to keep on the schedule, which is the biggest challenge for me, procrastinator that I am.

Anyway - since I apparently am still paying for premium Xanga (surprise! ch-ching!  $25 out of your wallet, don't mind us!), I guess I'll be around here for a while longer...

I'll post a little longer later ;)

Okay... so it's been almost two years.   What's happened in the life of Snicker Furfoot? Well, lessee... I'm no longer active in Amtgard, I broke up with Alice (of course you saw that in the previous post), I captured the heart of, and am madly in love with, my own personal song, Aria, added to the family, finished paying off my car, hit 100,000 miles, quit my craptacular check-bouncing job, started a new craptacular better-benefits and no-bounced checks job, quit doing the webcomic, started doing the webcomic again, started working for an MMORPG development company in my spare time, started learning the violin, and generally living life one day at a time!

*breathes*
So, let's cover some details....  First... meet Aria, my love, my light, my life. She has made me so very happy that sometimes I forget to breathe.  She's beautiful, friendly, caring, fun-loving, and makes me feel like the world is mine to play with like a marble.  She loves to play with her crystal stix, which she occasionally lights on fire...  She also hula-hoops, sometimes at the same time, and sometimes the hoop is on fire, too!!  We've had amazing adventures together (someday, I'll post the story of how we got her van to Texas), and now I'm missing her something terrible...  She's on the road travelling to Renaissance Faires around the country.  She's in Arizona right now (has been for a couple of months), and I don't get to see her again until next weekend.  April CANNOT get here fast enough!!

Along with Aria, came her cat, Val. Unfortunately, Val had to be fixed, something we took care of quickly, but not soon enough.  She seemed to slow down a LOT after that, and started putting on the pounds, so we decided a friend for her might help.  And that's where Little Bit came in.  Little Bit is a pint-size terror, but they have fun.  No really... I'm sure they're just playing!  (In order, that's Val, Little Bit, Val tripping Little Bit, Little Bit leaping on Val, and finally, Val pinning Little Bit for teh win!)

My car!  100,000 miles and still going strong.  I'm ecstatic that it's finally paid for and all mine.  My first car, and of course, my favourite.  The poor thing has survived five major accidents and still gets 38/45mpg (city/hwy).  If you've never driven a Prius, I highly recommend them.  It's a smooth ride, quiet, comfortable, fuel-efficient, reliable, handy in floodwaters (they're very hard, if not impossible, to flood out) and they're apparently bigger on the inside.... I moved my furniture from one apartment to another using only the Prius!  I've been thinking about trading it in, but I have a lot of debt to deal with first.

I'll update more about some of the other details in the future, but for now, just a final note.  I've started a new sleep style, called Polyphasic sleeping.  I'm hoping it will keep me more alert at work, as well as give me more time to do things like blogging .  That being said, here's my first official polyphasic sleep report:
My schedule is something like this:  Wake at 5:45am, leave for work by 6:40.  Lunch is around 11:00am, so I take a nap then (30-40 minutes), then back to work.  Leave work at 4:30ish, head home, nap for 30-45 minutes.  Get up, work until between 10:00 and midnight, then another 30-45 minute nap.  Get up around  work for a couple more hours, then  bed by 3am for my "core sleep".  It's not as "neat" a schedule as it needs to be yet, but I'm still in the adjustment phase: training the cats to leave me alone during naps, dropping off to sleep faster, becoming more aware of my body's sleep signals...  Speaking of which.... Nap time!!!  I *WILL* be updating again in the future!  A lot more regularly, because I plan on keeping track of how long I manage the "Everyman Sleep schedule."  Wish me luck!

The REAL Meaning of Life, the Universe and Everything...

This morning, while taking a shower, I had an epiphany (no, not an apostrophe - lightning did not strike my brain).  I was thinking about the recent movie adaptation of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, as well as the book and other versions, and I realized that Adams was trying to tell us something.

No, not 42.

It's about belonging.. and knowing your place in the world.  Arthur Dent represents the common man - always muddling along, always feeling out of place - the alien among the aliens.  Ford, for all of his weirdness on Earth, is at home among the stars.  Zaphod, even Trillian all seem to have their places.  Only when Arthur stops trying to be human, and just accepts that he is the alien, does he finally get peace.

We're all aliens on this planet earth.  We need to stop looking at the other guy as the weird one, and accept that we're all weird - just in different ways.  And the universe couldn't care less.

Yesterday was Mother's Day.  I spent the day in my car, in the rain at an empty park waiting for someone who never showed.  Good thing I had my laptop to keep me company.  Best investment I ever made.  Between my car and my laptop, some days I think I could just leave the human world behind.  If only I could find an endless supply of gas ;)

I did get a couple of things done - called my mom, talked to her for an hour.  Called my dad, too, just 'cause.   Had an interesting conversation with him about the government and reactions to things since 9/11.  Kind of related to my rant below, we talked about how the over-reaction of HomeSec has affected everything in a sort of trickle-down effect.  Last week, a young kid was suspended from school for having NAILS in his pocket.  Nails fer cryin' out loud!  Not even nine-inch ones, either.  Small carpentry nails left over from a boy scout project over the weekend.  Man if I was ever told to empty my pockets, I'd've been suspended about every day for the random miscellaneous junk that ends up in my pockets.  But this kid quite OBVIOUSLY had no foul play in mind - he was just forgetful.  And for that, he got suspended.  He's freaking 11-years-old!!!!!  This has GOT to stop, or soon kids will be getting suspended for having mechanical pencils (they have metal tips and could pierce someone's carotid artery!), or twinkies ('cause some obese kid might steal it, eat it and have a coronary embolism), or freakin' aspirin!!!  What next?  "Teacher!  Suspend Alex - he BREATHED on me!  He could have some fatal disease and be infecting me!!!"

People.  Get it together.  If we don't learn to work, live and play together WITHOUT trying to sue one another's pants off, we're going to destroy ourselves.  Life isn't perfect.  Learn to cope.
